Pediatric Voluntary Recognition Program
78,774 children were transported via ambulance in Pennsylvania in 2015 — that’s one transport every 7 minutes! In order to ensure that EMS agencies are prepared for pediatric patients, the Pediatric Voluntary Recognition Program (PVRP) was created by the EMS for Children program, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of EMS. This is a multi-tiered recognition program for EMS agencies who wish to establish programs and standards to improve their capabilities to deliver care to pediatrics. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.

National Pediatric Readiness Project
Pennsylvania’s EMSC program participated in a nationwide assessment of hospitals, called the Pediatric Readiness Project. This assessment involved all Pennsylvania Emergency Departments, began in April of 2013, and has just recently completed data analysis.
Partnering organizations on the Pediatric Readiness Project include: The EMS for Children Program, The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association.

Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator & Family-Centered Care in the Ambulance
Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator Program (PECC)
The PECC program designates an individual or group to coordinate pediatric education and readiness activities at the EMS agency and hospital emergency department level. Visit papecc.org for more detailed information on how to implement a Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator in your EMS agency
Family Centered Care in the Ambulance
Family presence during medical treatment, otherwise known as family-centered care, has been a growing national initiative. For prehospital medical providers, national level publication promote the inclusion of a patient’s family during EMS treatment and transport. The benefits of family-centered care are evidence-based and far reaching.
The Pennsylvania EMS for Children Program strongly believes that family presence during medical treatment benefits everyone, including patients, their families, and healthcare providers, by reducing medical errors and increasing patient satisfaction.

Emergency Care Guidelines for Schools

Please download the document (link below) and print as necessary.*These guidelines are designed to assist school staff in responding to pediatric emergencies. The purpose of the manual is to provide general guidance based on generally accepted courses of action when confronted with medical or trauma emergencies.The guidelines describe emergency management of various illnesses and injuries and, towards the end of the manual, also includes a section on disaster preparedness planning based on the type of threat. This also includes information to assist schools with pandemic flu planning.
